the ming paintings

The Forbidden City in Beijing was built to strict Feng Shui principles in the 15th century. Its monumental walls, the color sometimes changing over their vast area, spoke to me in a profound way the times I have visited it. I have walked around the grounds and down the red corridor open to the blue sky, and across the very large and serene open spaces. This uninterrupted color, warm red with orange tones and slightly rust, which I call Ming Red, can also take on a more rose cast in certain places. It defines this very large monument with all the qualities of the auspicious color: warmth/fire, energy source, happiness, good luck.

Large Ming 1, acrylic on canvas, 65"x89"

I have been developing this group of paintings over the past 5 years, so far mostly investigating the Ming Red mentioned above and Yellow, the color of the Emperor, power, center/earth, patience, wisdom. These works inspire serenity, quiet, meditation, and enjoyment of pure color.

The quality of the colors ranges from transparent to opaque to iridescent.
